I did not want to do it in Java. My alternatives are:

which uses a single library to support several scripting languages
(Python, Perl, JRuby, Lua, BeanShell, JavaScript, Tcl, and shell)

After looking at, and testing, Basic!, it appeared a good choice,
I preferred to use something I'm more familiar with - python or tcl.

After spending several hours with sample code, I was confident
enough to tweak a few of the samples. Things went well with an
example that used a method, cameraCapturePicture() - but it had
a small quirk. The person shooting had less than a second to
stabilize the camera while it focuses, then the camera shoots.
The alternative seemed to be cameraInteractiveCapturePicture().
After several failures, I found out the second method
was intended for the "Front-facing" camera (that would be
the camera on the same side as the screen)

it appeared the only alternative left was for another even less
documented method cameraStartPreview() and cameraStopPreview()

The hack would be that the camera would preview for several
seconds and then after a brief pause would focus and shoot.

It worked -- sort of.

The image was exposed in landscape while I shot in portrait.
As it turns out, the preview mode as in landscape. It appears
that as of this moment there are no other controls, modes, or
methods to use the camera under SL4A.

As it turns out, this round will be won by this dialect of
Dartmouth Basic - example f33_camera.bas does exactly
what I want the camera to do. Now all I have to do is upload
the picture.

MokaFive runs Windows in what it calls a secure container on Mac OS X and backs up work onto a company’s servers. IT managers can create a common Windows image that they can then push down to an employee’s Mac over the network. They can also update the image over the network, but that virtualized Windows desktop still works when the machine is offline.

Managers can also prevent employees from moving data out of their virtualized Windows desktop, and when data is moved over the network, it’s encrypted. But Gartner’s Cosgrove questions whether the tool is suited for that are handling extremely sensitive data, such as healthcare outfits and government agencies. “[Client-side virtualization tools] tend to be [used] in areas with low security,” he tells Wired.

There are already system deployed in top secret facilities where it's limited to physical access and your eye's only. Their are people who work all day on system where nothing can be sent or downloaded.

squareslate was shut down.... i am probably one of the few that captured all of it... and i might be on the hit list...

anyway, when i sent the list of shows to a few of my friends there were quite different results...

some were not allowed the attachment, stating there was a virus ( it is only images, .jpg's of the movie ads, a file, i created ) ...

another only got a short list of about 26 of the 300 .... and another, when they tried to reply to me, the attachment, was blocked...

seems that sopa/pipa is being implemented without congress... which could stop all independent communications between individuals, not just domain names... stuff like this .... really not harmful, and doing our own thing, just that somebody's over-programmed the bots to look for more then is really out there... which then could cause stuff like this ... if not "really" now, likely later, unfortunately.....

Indian scientists find way to cut heat in computers

In a finding that may lead to development of better-performing laptops, iPods or cellphones in future, material scientists have found a novel way to remove the heat generated in those devices by too many chips being packed in them to make them run faster and perform better.

The scientists' finding has the potential to create "wonders for the electronics world" if researchers can successfully upgrade their project to the industrial scale.

The electronics industry follows the empirical Moore's Law, which suggests processing speed of computer doubles in every 18 months. In every one and a half years, engineers find out ways to pack larger number of integrated-circuits (IC) onto a single chip to enable computers process more and more data efficiently.

As processing speed increases, removal of heat – generated by all these processors – from computers becomes an acute problem. If kept in the system, the heat will damage the machine.

At the moment, heat is drained out by a small fan. But this low-cost option would not work beyond a point if the number of ICs on a chip become too many. This is where the new discovery would come handy. Exploiting graphene – the thinnest material known to science – the scientists have found a unique way to drain away the excess heat from computers.

"If the packing density of chips increases substantially, conventional cooling systems used on chips such as fans or heat spreaders cannot handle this heat. The solution could lie in heat pipes to efficiently dissipate heat from the chip. Our technology could significantly improve the performance of such heat pipes for computer and other applications," team member Nikhil Koratkar, a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, told Deccan Herald. The findings were published in "Nature Materials" on January 22.

The researchers utilised a nano-material called graphene, which is an one atom-thick sheet of carbon packed like a honey-comb. Because of its many interesting properties, graphene is one of the hottest areas of research and being used extensively in nanotechnology. Koratkar, Pulickel Ajayan from Rice University and their colleagues successfully created those nano heat-pipes by coating copper, gold and silicon with graphene. "This is more useful for laptops, cellphones and iPod where lots of data is stored in a small space," said Koratkar.

Novel method

Silicon Inside the Asus eeePad Transformer Prime

The Silicon Story
The Asus Transformer Prime presents an interesting story from many angles. The first look inside showed a general look at the chips where we saw a fairly simple circuit board with a focus on the newest and greatest in only a couple of the sockets. You could conclude that it was those with the highest performance impact to the user.

There is also an interesting IP story of sorts because Hasbro, the makers of the Transformers Optimus Prime robot toy are suing Asus for trademark infringement. We wonder if there is a functional Optimus Prime Robot that we can reverse engineer to look for electronics patent hits on IP that Asus owns.

And finally, the silicon itself. And there are at least four interesting stories to be discussed: the processor, the touch screen controller, the WiFi chip, and the primary camera.

The Processor
The processor in question is none other than the first proven commercial use of the nVIDIA Tegra 3. For a mobile chip this processor is very large and 60% bigger than the prior Tegra 2, at the same process generation. Making room for more cores, room for what one nVIDIA CES 2012 presenter calls the “ninja” core, and of course all the power management and I/O. This die is interesting in that there are 4 digital regions in the middle of the chip that are separated from the rest of the digital logic by an array of (what appears to be) capacitors. There is also a physical separation from the I/O region and the main logic and memory.

We don’t tend to speculate on what blocks are what without providing specific evidence so we’ll be looking more closely at this chip in a Functional Analysis Report. When compared to the Tegra 2 (at right), we see a lot of differences in layout, although the ratio of the die allocated to analog and digital blocks is very similar. (low resolution provided)

Broadcom Wi-Fi Chip
One of the places where perhaps money was saved, or perhaps the timing for the original specification is revealed, is in the Wi-Fi module on the Asus Transformer Prime. Broadcom’s latest flagship product is the BCM 4330, and this devices uses theBCM4329. From our cataloging, the BCM4329 is the most successful WiFi chip in recent history, so from a functionality standpoint it is not really a compromise. Just a choice.

The BCM4329 when compared the the BCM4330, is a larger die and does not use Bluetooth 4.0.

Touch Screen Controller
The new flagship MXT768E from Atmel. Certainly new package markings versus the MXT540E we analyzed previously, but inside we see the exact same die right down to the ‘cut here’ markings.

Atmel’s marketing bumph calls the mXT768E, “the industry’s first 32–bit single–chip touch controller for tablets and other large screen applications up to 12–inches. Based on Atmel’s ultra–low–power 32-bit AVR architecture, the mXT768E meets the increased demand on signal processing needed for rejecting unintended touches and maintaining responsiveness on large screens. The mXT540E and mXT384E devices, also based on the advanced 32–bit AVR architecture, offer system designers the right price–to–performance selection for their touchscreen designs, and are appropriate for smaller tablets, e–book readers and high–performance smartphones.”

So the same die performing to different specifications. This does not look like a case of binning because when you examine the bond pads in the die photos, the 768E has a number of pads with wire bonds that are not bonded in the 540E. This approach lets Atmel incur only one set of design and die manufacturing costs, while delivering different price-performance parameters to clients. It makes good sense in many cases.

OmniVision BSI2 Hits the Street
The Asus Transformer Prime’s primary image sensor is the first design win that we have found for OmniVision’s BSI2 technology. This is an 8 Mp back illuminated sensor with die markings AEQGG6 OV2B8B0 and according to the specifications the device is theOmniVision 8830.
Features that show it to be BSI2 include the suspected TSVs located on either side of the bond pads (shown at right) and the copper metallization found during SEM analysis (EDS spectrum not shown). We have launched a full Imager Process Review on this device.

A friend sends me a site from his phone. It's a mobile site. You try to find full-site to see it properly and it refuses to go to the full site, there stuff's broken because it's an untested path.
There is no way to get from the mobile version of the article to the normal version without searching in Google for it. So you can't post it on Facebook or anything as the Mobile URL for the article.

Worse yet it the Mobile site it horrible on my android which can display the full site just find, but some sites detect it's android and refuse to deliver working content only the broken crippled content.

Looks like it's had some impact. I must admit I didn't move my domains. I probably should, I have had GoDaddy do a few crappy things to me over the years. Like grabbing domains for themselves that I couldn't pay at the time and an then lost. They wanted to auction it to me at insanely inflated prices.
I've notice if you use GoDaddy to check if a domain is available, and don't register it then and there, and it's a good name, it will be owned by GoDaddy within a day.
They took my domain from me and gave it to someone else who used forged paperwork, even though it was in my name personally and even when I produced legitimate paperwork they refuse to give it back and pointed me to very complex lawyer requiring dispute resolution process.

Domain registrar Go Daddy lost over 21,000 domains yesterday. It could be a coincidence--or it could be the result of the company's p.r. debacle over its support for the Stop Online Piracy Act.

The Kindle Touch has been rooted! There’s a proof video embedded after the break, but the best part about this discovery is that [Yifan Lu] wrote in-depth about how he discovered and exploited a security hole in the device.

The process begins by getting a dump of the firmware. If you remove the case it’s not hard to find the serial port on the board, which he did. But by that time someone else had already dumped the image and uploaded it. We guess you could say that [Yifan] was shocked by what he found in the disassembly. This a ground-up rewrite compared to past Kindle devices and it seems there’s a lot to be hacked. The bootloader is not locked, but messing around with that is a good way to brick the device. The Javascript, which is the language used for the UI, is not obfuscated and Amazon included many hooks for later plugins. Long story short, hacks for previous Kindles won’t work here, but it should be easy to reverse engineer the software and write new ones.

Gaining access to the device is as easy as injecting some HTML code into the UI. It is then run by the device as root (no kidding!). [Yifan] grabbed an MP3 file, changed its tag information to the HTML attack code, then played the file on the device to exploit the flaw. How long before malicious data from illegally downloaded MP3 files ends up blanking the root file system on one of these?

I was just looking at an Entire Windowing GUI environment designed for viewing large data sets that would stream data for viewing on a DOS PC (Non Windows) written in 1988 and it's only 200KB done in Turbo Pascal.

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS—How can a business compete with a free product? It’s not easy, and it’s more than just a theoretical question. U.S. newspapers are finding it difficult to compete with free news and the commentary of bloggers and other internet sources. And in the software world, the rise of open source products, which are available for free on the internet, is reshaping the technology industry.

One solution: “Divide and conquer,” says Haim Mendelson, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers Professor in the Graduate School of Business. Commercial firms, he says, have three levers to gain competitive advantage when they compete with a free product: Timing, product features, and the skillful use of network effects across market segments.

A recent paper on this topic by Mendelson, coauthored with Deishin Lee, PhD ’04, now a faculty member at Harvard Business School, is not a how-to manual for hard-pressed executives. Rather the researchers have built a theoretical model explaining the choices open to commercial firms. “Although open source is the lead example of our work, the principles certainly apply to other businesses, including, for example, the media business,” says Mendelson.

Underpinning the research is the concept of network effects, which holds that the value of a good or service to a potential customer increases as greater numbers of other customers own the good or are users of the service. In software, for example, Microsoft’s Office Suite enjoys great popularity partly because so many people use it. Having such a large user base encourages businesses to buy it since employees are probably already familiar with it and won’t need much training. And the more people who use the software, the less likely it will be that incompatibility will be a problem.

With that in mind, Mendelson says the ideal scenario for the commercial vendor is to bring its product to market first, to judiciously improve its product features, to keep its product “closed” so the open source product cannot tap into the network already built by the commercial product, and to segment the market so it can take advantage of a divide-and-conquer strategy.

Many products are sold into more than one market segment (consumers or small businesses, for example) with different characteristics. The divide and conquer strategy leverages the advantages the commercial vendor achieves across those segments: One segment is used to “seed” the network so the product can achieve critical mass, which makes it more attractive to buyers in other segments who then end up choosing the more popular product over the free product.

Some products, Microsoft Office is a good example, initially were targeted at a commercial market. As its popularity grew, it made sense to sell Office to consumers, many of whom had become familiar with it at work. Other products, such as Apple’s computers and iPhones, were first popular in the home market but that success led to their use in an office setting. In either case, it makes sense for a vendor to seed the market by selling a product relatively cheaply to the first market segment and then charge the second segment more, says Mendelson.

There are times, however, when the open source product gets to market first. In that case, the commercial vendor does well to enter the market with a compatible product and then invest in new product features to make its product compelling even though it costs more—a strategy sometimes known as “embrace and extend.” In this case, being “open” (or compatible) helps the commercial firm tap into the network created by the free product. Then, the commercial firm must compete by out-innovating the free product.

In fact, frequently adding features to a commercial product is important no matter who gets to market first. New and improved features can outweigh the price advantage of an open source product.

In the media world, the network effects are indirect: Content providers prefer to publish where there is a large audience, and audiences prefer to go where there is a good selection of high-quality content. As a result, a larger audience attracts content providers, which in turn is attractive to audiences, which creates the “virtuous cycle” of network effects.

In this space, competing with the avalanche of free material is very challenging, and different providers compete in different ways. In the area of news, standards are largely open and free content has been abundant for years. As a result, content providers find it difficult to exploit the network effects, and the main lever available to them is product innovation.

In the area of music, Apple managed to create a closed network based on the “virtuous cycle” of the iPod device making the iTunes online music network more attractive, and vice versa. In spite of the prevalence of “free” music, the combination of innovative products, a superior user experience, and a closed network, which is incompatible with competing devices and music stores, created growing and highly profitable music offerings.

Ultimately, from the point of view of the buyer, free products provide an important benefit. “Even if consumers do not end up adopting the free product, it can act as a credible threat to the commercial firm, forcing it to both lower prices and invest more in product innovation,” says Mendelson.

Several readers sent word of HP's announcement that the company will be contributing webOS to the open source community. According to HP's press release, they will continue to be active in webOS's development, and one of their goals will be to avoid fragmentation. ENYO, the application framework for webOS, will also go open source in the near future.

In this time of magic, who needs to know what an OS is let alone how to code one?
Our College IT has disappeared. I knew this would happen, it’s become invisible to my students. Maybe it simply faded away when we weren’t looking properly. We use computers in class every day, many times a day; my course now utterly relies on Moodle to keep in touch, store our stuff and mark our tests; the World Wide Web is our constant companion whether on the whiteboard, laptop or phone ... but we don’t ‘see’ it anymore.
The other day I was asked by a CTSW* what OS I was using. For a few moments I was stumped until I remembered that it was called Chrome. Gosh the last time I thought about an OS I was using a purple Linux adorned with kiddy icons, I’d best find out what the students know.
Naturally enough later I asked my students what OS they used on their laptops and Smart Phones. They genuinely did not know ... no really, I had to prompt them before they even said ‘Windows’ for their laptops (‘Microsoft’ was their first response), and further differentiation (XP, Vista or 7) was almost absent. No-one had the tiniest clue about their phones’ OS but amazingly they had heard of Android and one wondered whether he could get it for his i-Phone because ‘he had heard good things’.
Everyone knew about ‘apps’ no-one knew what an app was.
By the way these young folk are 18-30 year old Applied Science students if that makes any difference to you.
Here is some more anecdotal ‘proof’ of software’s invisibility. A lot of our written work is uploaded to Moodle for the simple reason that it prevents me from losing it. When I do find it, it is usually in the docx format, however quite a lot is .odt or .ods. The ‘uploaders’ when congratulated by me on using a Free, Open Source package merely look back blankly.
On interrogation it transpires that they had no idea why Word was saving it ‘like that’ as they have the latest version (of?). Those few that actually knew they were using Open Office also knew they have to save it as .doc/.docx. Their motivation for this technical feat was bizarrely was that the college’s ‘old’ computers could not read it otherwise. By the way, only one person in the class was actually using MS Word outside of college.
ICT (school IT) teaching is being criticised harshly at the moment and we are witnessing bewildered mandarins pretending to support initiatives to teach children to code whilst hoping that they get the technical words in roughly the right order. But nearly all children have been taught ICT for years so if the OS has been forgotten what about other stuff?

I tried an old chestnut certain to have been drummed into them: did anyone backup their work? Again that look. Seems, (like me) anything they don’t want to lose is kept on-line and looked after by Microsoft, Facebook or Google.
It got worse. None of us had a clue how much RAM we had, how fast our CPU was or what storage we had on our expensive devices. Seems like only Grammar School grandad denim clad blokes like Nick Gibb (Minister of State for Schools) and whey- faced ICT teachers still know that stuff.
All of the old has become invisible. Then came the final proof that the supernatural forces were at work.
As I said earlier I have come to rely on Moodle for day to day course management but I have also been trialing tablets in class to leverage the VLE’s resources (why tablets? Because anything with a screen and a keyboard that a person can hide behind is accessing Facebook instead being on task). Be that as it may, our tablets run Android and thus I find that I am presiding over a computerised student-world that is almost entirely open-source-derived whether it be web-delivered (Moodle), desktop (Open Office) or tablet ( Android ).
I told you everything had become invisible, how else can you explain how open source software snuck in there?
Conclusions

ICT teaching is genuinely useless as has been said by so many
The days of pseudo IT knowledge (how big is your RAM etc) have all but gone
Vanishingly few understand how computers work, few know anything technical about them and none mind that it’s now all simply ‘magic’.

In the new world of magic the question now becomes how to get the Muggles in Whitehall to do anything sensible at all.
Maybe we need an Academy or Free School to blaze the trail; let’s call it Hogwarts. Seriously though if computing has in effect become magic to a modern western society we are in deep s***
